Sam’s Town
Before its release, The Killers front-man Brandon Flowers declared the band’s sophomore effort,
Sam’s Town, to be “one of the best albums in the past 20
years.” His conviction nearly had fans convinced, that is, until
their new single “When You Were Young,” began playing on the radio,
and everyone did a double take when they realized they weren’t
listening to a Coldplay B-side. Inflated egos aside, Sam’s
Town has broken some new ground and taken a new direction from
their debut Hot Fuss. 
The group seems to have traded in its
previously established dance-rock sound for a new-wave style of
’80s electroclash that buzzes with some charming synths. Tracks
like “Where the White Boys Dance” and “Uncle Jonny” are overtly
reminiscient of Springsteen and other ’80s giants. The stylistic
leap is commendable, but The Killers may have abandoned a perfectly
fine ship by leaving behind dance-rock.
