News-Press Nine Win Ethics Award
Over the objections of Santa Barbara News-Press owner Wendy McCaw, the Society of Professional Journalists gave the Ethics in Journalism Award to nine of the News-Press editors and writers–including editor-in-chief Jerry Roberts and longtime columnist Barney Brantingham–who resigned from the paper in the past month, citing breaches of journalistic ethics by McCaw and her co-publisher and fiance, Arthur von Wiesenberger.

Ken Curtis is stepping down as the City of Goleta’s director of planning and environmental services. Curtis guided the City Council through the writing of Goleta’s first draft General Plan, which has yet to undergo environmental review and final approval by the city and the state.

Channel Islands Marine Reserves Look to Double in Size
Old wounds from battles between local fishermen and federal authorities are sure to reopen in coming weeks after long-simmering plans to nearly double the existing marine reserves and marine conservancy areas in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary were released last week.
HELP FOR OIL CLEANUP BACKLOG:
The County Fire Department has hired two additional hazardous materials specialists to help deal with oil cleanup at some 400 sites in and near Santa Maria. Particularly hard hit are residents of the Parksville and Sunrise Hills housing developments, built on land contaminated by leaking oil wells.
NO WORRIES, CLAIMS LEVY:
Developer Bill Levy put out a press release stating that construction on his controversial time-share condo project on lower State Street will begin within 60 days, even though one of his key financersMountain Fundinghas issued a notice of default charging that Levy and his partners are delinquent on a loan to the tune of $35 million.
