The Professional Artists Lab and the California NanoSystems Institute at UCSB have catalyzed a competition that combines art, science, and technology. Scientists, technologists, and artists generate exploration in the STAGE script competition, which is now accepting scripts that play on scientific and technological themes, stories, issues, and events.
Potential Democratic presidential candidate Russ Feingold (pictured)-the outspoken senator from Wisconsin-pressed the flesh in Santa Barbara last weekend, warning that continued political caution by Democratic candidates could spell certain defeat in the upcoming November elections. Speaking first at a Montecito fundraiser and later at a Democratic Women’s luncheon, Feingold said some leaders are “too timid” about standing up for what they believe. The only senator to oppose the PATRIOT Act, Feingold also voted against giving President George W. Bush war authorization powers and, more recently, introduced a bill to censure Bush for authorizing wiretaps on the telephones of American citizens. This latter effort caused much embarrassment among Democratic moderates and failed.

Old Spanish Days Fiesta has always had a Spirit — one girl chosen to represent the essence of Spanish heritage in Santa
FIESTACULAR: Mention Fiesta to five different Santa Barbarans and you might get five different responses, from grins to grimaces. Some make a point of fleeing town in fear of what Old Spanish Days brings, namely partly teetering hordes and streets flecked with confetti and horse dung. Some eagerly soak it in, and for different reasons-i.e. the excuse to bathe in wanton revelry and eat Mexican for a few days, or to embrace the cultural pageantry of our Spanish heritage. Of course, others find the whole Spanish angle a bit queasy and politically incorrect, given that this was Chumash territory until quite recently, when the Mission system brought its program of slavery and disease northward from Mexico to the indigenous population.
It isn’t every day that two tales from Ireland arrive simultaneously on California’s doorstep. What with our inevitable local preoccupations, and the situation of the world at large growing steadily more precarious, Ireland is not necessarily uppermost in our minds. Nevertheless, two wonderful recent Irish plays are opening this week at the Rubicon Theatre, and both Belfast Blues and The Good Thief strike timely notes with the issues they raise. Be it through a young girl’s journey to womanhood in a city riddled with religious strife (Blues), or by means of a hired thug’s sudden and desperate change of heart (Thief), both of these critically acclaimed productions successfully address the more subtle terrors of violence in contemporary society.
New mom and soon-to-be mom again Laurel Huston is a lean, green, cleaning machine. Her new home-cleaning service, Simply Green, offers complete home cleaning that uses only non-toxic, all-natural products. As a mother, Huston became concerned about using chemical cleaners in her own home, as many such cleaners contain potentially dangerous toxins that can cause illness, allergic reactions, eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation, fatigue, and disease. But when she set out to find a service that offered environmentally conscious alternatives and discovered that no such service existed, she took it upon herself to create one.
While an argument could be made that what I do for a living constitutes paparazzism, I tend not to think of it that way. I don’t do stake-outs, engage in high-speed chases, or plumb the depths of dumpsters in the hopes of uncovering a salacious scoop, after all. Being peeped is a friendly, opt-in type of experience; paparazzi-lite. Which is why I tend to feel a bit out of my element when positioned on the edge of the red carpet, angling for a good shot while surrounded by scores of shutterbugs looking to do the same.
