RAPIST SENTENCED:

Convicted Devereux School rapist Darren Boyer Thomas was sentenced to eight years in prison last week in a Santa Barbara court. Earlier this spring, it took a jury fewer than two hours to find the 39-year-old Thomas guilty of raping a severely autistic former client of his at the Devereux School in Goleta.

HORSE POOP:

The Santa Barbara Channelkeepers settled a long-simmering lawsuit against the Polo Club, claiming that horse droppings produced by the polo ponies were being washed down a drainage ditch that fed into a creek that emptied into the ocean.

Border Ballads

Corridos! Ballads of the Borderlands

At El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista. Closed. Is it a play, a variety show, a play with music, or a musical? El Teatro Campesino’s recent production of Corridos! Ballads of the Borderlands defies description. Corridos are Mexican ballads that tell a story and/or speak of human relations-love, death, sex, power, and violence. This production pushes the envelope of what a “corrido” is by injecting elements of hip-hop, techno-banda, rock ‘n’ roll, and even songs of Chinese origin.

On the Beat

And Then There Were None: The 10th and 11th journalists to resign from the Santa Barbara News-Press during the ongoing meltdown are Lindsay Foster, a young copy editor and designer; and Camie Cohee, a Montecito and Carpinteria reporter, just back from her honeymoon. The new hubby: Santa Barbara City Councilmember Brian Barnwell. As I understand it, when Camie returned to work Tuesday she ran into so much unprofessional flak from management that she quit in protest, to the applause of her fellow journos.

Buyer Beware

The other day, I visited a local liquor store. Mind you, I didn’t write “wine retailer.” Not that I have anything against liquor stores. I just want to clarify that fine wine retailers like the Wine Cask, East Beach, Vino Divino, Gelson’s, Renegade Wines, etc. would never employ the tactics I’m about to discuss. Still, at this little Santa Barbara County liquor store, something became evident-older vintages of famous wines it had recently acquired appeared to be questionable at best. And, when the retailer refused to answer my questions regarding their origins of purchase, I became even more suspicious.

Aikido Gets Kicked Out

It looks as if Aikido of Santa Barbara (pictured) on East Cota Street is the latest in a rapidly growing list of local businesses that are being forced out of their longtime locations due to rising rents and a big-money real estate market. According to the dojo’s sensai Christine Wong, the nonprofit school of martial arts was served with eviction papers in early June, despite having what she characterized as a “good relationship” with the building’s owners for nearly 15 years and a current three-year lease that isn’t set to expire until July 2008. “The owners want to sell the property and I guess they think they can’t sell it for what it’s worth with us still in it,” Wong explained.

Day One of eating my way through Fiesta, 2006:

So where’s the best food at El Mercado de la Guerra? A guy dashed past me just after the booths opened at 11 a.m., saying, “You can tell how good the food is by how long the line is.”

Dem Maverick Takes on Squishy Middle

Senator Feingold Urges Party Leaders to ‘Stand Up and Show Some Guts’

At a time when high-profile Democratic Party warhorses such as Hillary Clinton are hewing aggressively to the middle, Wisconsin senator and possible presidential aspirant Russell Feingold is warning the party might be in need of more organ transplants than the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion combined. “Democrats need to stand up and say what we believe and show some guts,” said Feingold, 53, during a hurried phone interview that took place as he waited to board his plane from Milwaukee to Washington, D.C.
