Dog in the Fog

READ AND WEEP: In a perverse way, I’d like to thank embattled News-Press owner Wendy P. McCaw and her bilious right-hand man Travis K. Armstrong for all the uproar now engulfing the News-Press and the whole town. The sad soap opera unfolding at the De la Guerra Plaza digs of Santa Barbara’s oldest paper has succeeded in diverting our attention-if only a little bit-from the gathering storm clouds of World War III now spreading from Lebanon and Israel. Even for the most defiantly chirpy among us, these are scary times indeed.

THIRD DISTRICT JOCKEYING

Brooks Firestone announced he will seek another term as 3rd District Supervisor and hosted a $125-per-plate kickoff dinner at his Santa Ynez winery home. The announcement, coming more than two years before the end of his term in 2008, sent the message to those positioning themselves for a run that the Firestone Tire heir is not the one-term hobbyist he was rumored to be.

Heart and Home

Between recording as a solo artist and reigniting the enigmatic Toad the Wet Sprocket, life’s recently been a balancing act for Glen Phillips. But while his musical career requires a little juggling, it’s not the only thing Phillips is balancing, for it’s his family that affords him the greatest riches. So when the singer/songwriter brings both musical chariots back to Santa Barbara next week-with a solo show at SOhO on Tuesday, July 25 and as part of Toad at the Marjorie Luke on Thursday, July 27-one senses the greatest reward for Glen Phillips will come from simply being home.

Though the buyer and the amount paid have yet to be disclosed, the asking price was about $120 million for the total package of 8,580-acre El Cojo and 15,813-acre Jalama.

Goleta Race Heats Up

The Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce said it supported the campaigns of two City Council challengers and held a press conference on Monday to express concerns about Goleta’s draft General Plan, with Chamber President Kristen Amyx saying the plan needed significant revision. The current City Council would like to write the ordinances implementing the plan, but that wish may be derailed by the outcome of the City Council race.

DIRTY OCEAN, CLEAN CREEKS

According to data presented at a Heal the Ocean press conference, the concentration of fecal bacteria along the ocean’s edge at East Beach is nearly a thousand times higher than it is just a few hundred yards up Mission Creek, a fact that defies conventional wisdom linking creek flow to polluted oceans.

RECONSIDERING SANTA YNEZ

In light of attacks last week on the draft Santa Ynez Valley Community Plan, the Board of Supervisors this week decided to create an ad hoc subcommittee to iron out disagreements before voting on whether to adopt the plan.
