Procrastination, or How to Get Through Finals Without Freaking Out

finals%20ex.jpg It’s finals week, and that means stress, exhaustion, and emotions are running high in Isla Vista. With the weather and our professors seemingly conspiring to make this week as miserable as possible, it seems like most Isla Vistans will spend the next several days stressed out, bummed out, and burnt out. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Indy Fights Back

lawsuit.jpg “Nope. You must be mistaken. If you actually read the pertinent laws, we did nothing wrong.” That’s the layman’s translation for the 10 pages of paperwork filed on Monday afternoon, December 11, by the attorneys for The Independent in response to the lawsuit being brought by the News-Press and Wendy McCaw. Also, was Randy Alcorn fired? And check out a link to the latest McCaw memo circulating her employees’ saddened desks.

Arnoldi’s Lasagna

Lasagna is a perfect meal for this time of year when the nights are supposed to be long and chilly. It’s warm, highly filling, and full of carbs, which makes going to bed right after dinner the only thing you’ll want to do.

But now the group is one of five finalists in a competition on the Web site garageband.com. In less than a week, the results of what could be a make-or-break competition for the band will be announced.

You know, we’d be happy to stop writing about the News-Press debacle anytime soon, repurpose this blog to covering all sorts of S.B. media, and just go back to the regular news-gathering/scoop-snagging gig we’ve been doing for 20 years now. But it seems that the N-P‘s owner Wendy McCaw just can’t stop bringing the spotlight of shame back her way at least once a week.

See Gauchos Celebrate

You probably know by now that on December 3, the UCSB men’s soccer team won the national championship. Did you hear what the Gaucho fans did upon learning that? They threw a goal into the ocean. Did you see that happen? Now you can.

The Lobero Is Your Living Room

This Tuesday night, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra will give us a rare musical experience: the sound of a small orchestra. Classical music these days tends to come in very small or very large packages, either from famous soloists or big, bold orchestras. The in-between sound that privileged audiences of the 18th century hired for their “chambers” (big living rooms and dedicated music rooms-surely you have one of those, or both) hardly finds a place in 21st-century schedules.
