Chief Sanchez on the Hot Seat

Management Audit Looms for Police Department

Even with the chill of Santa Barbara’s May gray and June gloom, it’s been an especially hot six weeks for Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez. High-profile gang violence captures headlines; the police department lost a $500,000 jury verdict to an ex-cop who claimed he was retaliated against for blowing the whistle on homophobic remarks; and what appeared to be a nasty bar-time street fight three weeks ago erupted into a scary showdown between officers and about 300 angry, inebriated onlookers, some of whom showed up before the City Council last Tuesday to allege police misconduct.

The Man of Angst and Steel

A Heady Review of Superman Returns

Every time we saw a preview, my spouse asked: Where is he returning from? Don’t know, I said, maybe the Phantom Zone, the drawing board. Now that I’ve seen the picture, I realize the question is wrong; the better query is: Where is he returning to? The big screen is the cynical reply. But in truth, Superman always returns to us.

July 4 marked the grand opening of the Reagan Ranch Center at 217 State Street in Santa Barbara, formerly the Neal Hotel Building. The ribbon-cutting event included the opening of student programs, a barbecue for foundation supporters, and a speech by radio host Michael Reagan, the late president’s son.

The Do Lab Presents Lightning in a Bottle at Live Oak Campground

Some people are just insane. That’s the only conclusion to come to when confronted with evidence of the Do Lab, the Los Angeles artists’ collective behind the most outrageous, impressive, magical, and ambitious projects I’ve encountered in the last few years.

Naples Debate Returns

More than six months behind schedule, the draft Environmental Impact Report for the proposed development of Santa Barbara Ranch was released late last week. The long-awaited report – compiled by the URS Corporation – identifies several Class I (i.e. significant) environmental impacts within Orange County developer Matt Osgood’s plan to put 54 luxury homes on the 485-acre area popularly known as Naples.

ARTWALKING:

In conjunction with the Art Walk for Kids and Adults, the Jewish Federation of Greater S.B.’s Keston Youth Program is sponsoring an art exhibit that features works by autistic, developmentally disabled, special needs, and at-risk teens and adults. Admission to the exhibit, located at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center (524 Chapala St.), is free and work will be on display until Sept. 14. Artworks at the exhibit can be purchased for $225 each, which will benefit both the Art Walk for Kids and Adults,
and the Jewish Federation.

Hot, Hot Heat

Keeping Alive Your Summer Garden

The summer equinox has just passed, but the sun is still high in the sky. That means long days filled with light and heat to stimulate maximum growth in plants. The third limiting element is water, and nature is not providing any of that (with the exception of those foggy mornings), so it is up to us to make sure the garden has what it needs to thrive. Here are some tips on watering to help.
