Ohio Players

Preucil, Kim, and Rowe Trio, presented by the Music Academy of the West. At Lotte Lehmann Hall, Tuesday, November 28.

Last Tuesday night at the Music Academy of the West’s Lotte Lehmann Hall, a “what’s wrong with this picture” feeling quickly segued into a satisfying “what’s right with this picture” sensation. After decades of expecting and experiencing the Music Academy of the West’s musical splendor in its usual summertime slot, a new wrinkle has appeared with the inaugural Advanced Strings Workshop.

SCULPTOR

How do you put a price on your own head? Sculptor Andy Johnson first discovered stone at age 11, and has since carved something every day. From two-faced rotating heads to spermatozoa in repose to an ancient-looking representation of a woman’s head the size of a young teenager’s fist, Johnson creates timeless art that demands a second look and may even offend. Until recently, he never felt the desire to sell anything. He just makes the stuff because he likes it.

CENTER STAGE’S NEW DIRECTOR

Carpinteria’s Kristin McGuire was named the executive director of Center Stage Theater last week. McGuire is a successful businesswoman from a marketing and sales background…

Culture Schlock

Turistas. Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, Olivia Wilde, Desmond Askew, and Beau Garrett star in a film written by Michael Ross and directed by John Stockwell.

As we walked into the theater to get our periodic dose of slasher-style schlock in the form of Turistas, the smart-mouthed ticket-taker quipped, “Okay, two for the Brazilian Hostel.” That’s about right, with a splash of TV’s Fear Factor and some post-Aruba xenophobia thrown in for bad measure.

FREE CLASSICAL

On Wednesday, December 13 at
11 a.m., flautist Adrian Spence, organist Mahlon Balderston, and pianist Rosa Loguidice will perform a free concert for the Santa Barbara Music Club in the public library’s Faulkner Gallery.

FILM FEST VOLUNTEERS

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is looking for volunteers to help out before and during the January 25-February 4, 2007 event.

A Bright Idea

Light/Art: Mystic Crystal Revelation. At Contemporary Arts Forum. Shows through January 7, 2007.

This group show hinges on the idea that light has achieved such currency as an art medium that it no longer need be considered strange or new. Just like oil paintings or bronze sculptures, it suggests, light works have been around long enough to exist without justification as artistic innovations.

Skater Snoopy

It’s Christmas, Snoopy! On Ice. At the Arlington Theatre, Saturday, December 2.

I’m a big Snoopy fan, so when I heard the feisty dog was coming to Santa Barbara as part of an ice skating performance, I jumped at the chance to see the show. Last Saturday, with my wee niece and nephew at my side, I settled into my seat at the Arlington ready to be swept away by the magic of Charles Schulz’s beloved beagle come to life-on ice, no less.

Drawing Lines in the Sand

Cops, City Hall at Loggerheads Over New Contract

The bad blood between the Santa Barbara Police Officers Association (POA) and City Hall over contract negotiations-which are currently at a standstill-just got a whole lot worse. After a two-hour meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel, the union membership voted for the fourth time to reject City Hall’s “best, last, and final offer.”

Auto Show

The Car Play Project. At Westmont College, Saturday, December 2.

Following a busy fall hosting the Lit Moon World Shakespeare Festival, Westmont College continues to explore innovative concepts in theater, most recently with last weekend’s The Car Play Project. The audience gathered at 7 p.m. at the edge of a parking lot where 16 automobiles were circled around a central pavilion structure lit with Christmas lights and stocked with cookies, hot coffee, and apple cider.
