Top Five Reasons Why INXS Rocks @ www.stubhub.com

INXS plays the Lobero Theatre on June 14, and in a national first, tickets are only being sold as part of a StubHub.com auction. The online ticket vendor offers all seats first for $1 and then allows a true open-market pricing dynamic to occur. That gives every INXS fan an equal opportunity to see the show. Here are five great reasons:

The Animating Kids

Earthlight Shines on Santa Barbara Once Again

This summer, rather than getting lost in the fog of June gloom, Santa Barbara kids will have the opportunity to lose themselves in the magic of animation. The celebrated Earthlight Pictures Animation Training program, run by John Teton, returns to town after a one-year hiatus for a “one-time-only” session from June 19-30.

QUAKE CASH:

In the wake of last week’s devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia, local ¼ber-charity Direct Relief International (DRI) mobilized to provide the victims with thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies and thousands more in general aid.

Ceylon Creeper

The Climbing Pothos Plant

Everybody has seen this plant. The ease with which it grows in low-light areas and the facility with which it roots from cuttings have made it one of those ubiquitous house plants. It creeps and crawls off of kitchen windowsills, office desks, and bathroom countertops.

Campaign Contribution Reports Filed, Wolf Leads the Pack

The official deadline to report campaign donations passed quietly on May 20, though candidates may continue to receive campaign funds from donors until the eve of the election, provided they file a late contribution report within 48 hours of receiving late donations. According to the campaign finance reform initiative-Prop 34-passed by California voters in 2000, candidates are required to file periodic reports throughout their campaigns, rather than after the fact. However, loopholes are fairly prevalent and enforcement is minimal: Contributors of $100 or more often neglect to list the name of their company; or, if contributors are retired or financially supported by a spouse, they are not required to state their source of income.

Spotlight on… Riviera Fine Art

Since opening the Riviera Fine Art gallery earlier this year, Caleb Johns has earned his reputation as a risk-taker. Rather than being intimidated by the challenges of running a business on State Street, the 33-year-old San Diegan seized the opportunity to transform a prime piece of real estate into a museum-quality showroom. Drawing from years of experience running galleries in Hawaii and Las Vegas, Johns has gifted our town with a glimpse of cutting-edge, contemporary style. Nobody said it would be easy, but with an unshakable commitment to the integrity of his art, Johns’s ambitious vision is already coming to fruition.

The Edge of Sadness

Mitsuru Kubo, viola, in a UCSB Bachelor of Music Senior Recital, with Egle Januleviciute and Sarah Broomell, pianos; and Alice Crone, clarinet. At Karl Geiringer Hall, Thursday, May 25.
Cara Iverson, soprano, in a Master of Music Recital, with Dr. John Ballerino, piano; and Helen Park, clarinet. At Karl Geiringer Hall, Friday, May 26.

One of the pleasures of these degree recitals is that the young candidates tend to dress up for the occasion. Both Kubo and Iverson chose the formality of a floor-length skirt or gown, in somber colors, which underscored the seriousness of the event. These are not amateurs, but students on the cusp of becoming professionals.

OFFICERS APPLAUDED

On May 23, eight Santa Barbara police officers were awarded the H. Thomas Guerry Award for Valor in recognition of their exceptional bravery and skill in the field. Sr. Deputy Clayton Turner, Deputy Michael Harris, Deputy Jonathon Jenkins, Deputy Kenneth Rushing, and Deputy Christopher Gotschall-who comprise Goleta Patrol Squad D-were recognized for their response to late January’s tragic postal service shootings.

BIRDS OF PASSAGE

Six bald eagle chicks were taken from their mothers at eight weeks and carried aboard the 100-foot Ocean Ranger to manmade nests on Santa Cruz Island. The chicks-already larger than full-grown chickens-are being reintroduced to the island in an effort to undo the damage done by DDT poisonings of the mid-20th century, when the Montrose Chemical Corporation dumped the shell-thinning pesticide into the ocean from its Palos Verdes factory, nearly extinguishing California’s bald eagle population.
