Cello of the Gods

Judgement Day Brings String Metal to Giovanni’s

The term “heavy metal” ordinarily conjures a very distinct group of images: things dark and evil, involving studded black leather, Viking sword fights, and fog machines. At the very least, an electric guitar should come to mind. After all, the backbone of every hard-rock band is the chainsaw guitar riff-unless that hard-rock band is Judgement Day, an Oakland trio whose members play drums, cello, and violin. No guitars, no kidding.

Own Reward

Behind the Scenes with Drawings: Renaissance to Rococo

At the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, through July 9.
cambiaso.gifDo you ever get the feeling walking through an art exhibition that the curator is worried you could be out looking at other images-bigger, more colorful, high-definition images? I’ve been in some galleries lately that were so multimedia and so high-impact that they ought to be on medication for attention deficit disorder.

This is not a problem for the current drawing exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Behind the Scenes with Drawings: Renaissance to Rococo gives you both your own space and rewards you for stepping in front of each of its works. In some cases, such as Luca Cambiaso’s “The Infant Jesus Taking His First Steps” (pictured), the reward is the charm of a simple family scene and a sure, light touch with pen and ink.

Big-Wave Peeps

Surf Film Chasing Dora Premiere

Last summer, while on vacation in Kaua’i, I attempted surfing for the very first time. (I confess I’ve never had much desire here; I’m too much of a baby to deal with the frigid water and the uncomfortable wetsuits it necessitates.) As we paddled out, my instructor Sparky (no joke) took a look around at the overcrowded waves and said, “It’s a travesty to the sport of surfing.” Admittedly, the overcrowding did prove to be annoying; the first time I managed to stand up, I found myself headed straight for another student’s head, and jumped off the board scarcely in time to avoid being party to an unintentional decapitation.
