OAXACAN FUN:

Everyone’s invited to a free celebration next Friday, May 19, to recognize and trace the history of one of California’s most valuable resources: the farm laborer. The event highlights two photo exhibits: Taking Root: A Century of Migrant Workers in California, at the S.B. Museum of Art, and The New Oakies: A Tribute to the Strawberry Pickers of Santa Maria Valley, at Channing Peake. The Oaxacan-style fiesta takes place in the plaza between the two galleries, from 5-7 p.m.

Pico Iyer and Matthieu Ricard Explore Happiness

Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard has had the opportunity in the past month to carry out his contemplative practice of meditation. After 40 days in his small hermitage in the mountains in Nepal, he was held up an additional week in the high-altitude kingdom due to political insurgency. He crossed battle lines at 3 a.m. in order to board a plane. Upon arriving in his home country of France, he spent 10 days and nights in a hospital room at the bedside of his father, the celebrated philosopher and writer Jean-Fran§ois Revel (with whom Ricard coauthored The Monk and the Philosopher), before Revel died on April 30.

While he respects tradition as much as the next Hawaiian, the 28-year-old virtuoso is instilled with a thirst for experimentation. Occasionally transforming the gentle four-stringed instrument into a roaring guitar is his idea of a good time.

Three Q’s with Rebecca Tron

The monthly SongTree series, which goes down at Goleta’s Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, is hosting singer-songwriter Rebecca Troon this Saturday, May 6. She’ll be followed by The Tatters, whose sound-three women’s voices in tight harmony, backed by three fabulous multi-instrumentalists (affectionately known as “The Lowly Sidemen”)-has been described as powerful, vintage Americana. For tickets, call 403-2639 and visit songtree.org. To get a better idea for the show, Arts Life chatted with Rebecca Troon.
