The Life Pursuit
(Matador; February 2006)
the%20life%20pursuit.jpgA fun game to play while listening to this album is to choose the band each song most sounds like. The ones I came up withT-Rex, Velvet Underground, the Smiths, the Mamas and the Papas, Steely Danare a testament to the album’s diversity and skill. This Scottish group has clearly perked up with age, producing songs that are catchy and upbeat while retaining Stuart Murdoch’s wit, crypticness, and spiritualitythink dogma-free Christianity meets sunshine ’70s pop. Still, there’s something disturbing about the rave reviews this albumhands down B&S’s poppiesthas received, most claiming it’s the band’s most accomplished work yet. What was wrong with the ones wherein they sound like themselves? -Hannah Tennant-Moore

Nine Black Alps Ascend to SOhO’s Stage

nineblackalps.gifManchester, England’s Nine Black Alps met and formed in 2003. Nine months later they were signed to Island Records. The band members quickly quit their day jobs and headed out on a frenetic stint of recording and touring, both in Europe and the United States. Fresh off a big gig at the celebrated Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last weekend in Indio, California, the band is on its way to Santa Barbara to play at SOhO next Thursday, along with homegrown indie-darlings the Kissing Tigers and Entoven.

Ze Fairchild 1968-2006

Ihave no clue how to carry on without Ze’s wonderful charm in our lives. She was the very best of the best-such a loving wife and mother. Our son Nick and I were so lucky she was able to show us the love she brought to this world. She was a true angel here on earth.

Journey of Enlightenment

The Spirituality of Journey Publications

Discovering one’s calling in life often comes unexpectedly. Diagnosed in 1996 with congestive heart failure and advised to avoid stress, Jolinda Pizzirani chose to make the best of the situation. Instead of knitting, she picked up a slightly more ambitious hobby: book publishing. Since then, the Summerland home the Santa Barbara native shares with her husband Patrizio on Ortega Hill has become a hub of inspiration spreading far and wide.

John Harris& Fred Kenyon

Most of us rely on our hands for the majority of our work. So did John Harris, until the years of manual massage therapy began to take their toll.

Nopal and Jicama Salad

The perfect cross between neighborhood eatery and high-class concept dining, SpiritLand Bistro never gets dull. In addition to their regular menu, weekly specials each follow a theme.

GREEN MONEY, GREEN POWER:

A group of masters students from UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science proposed a strategy for profitably reducing their school’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Photo Envy of the Week

Capturing Coachella

I’ve always envied concert photographers: Not only do they go to shows for free, but they get the best seats. So when I realized my photographer boyfriend wasn’t coming to Coachella with me, and therefore his photo pass was up for grabs, I jumped at the chance to see how the other half lives. After years of festival frustration made up of heat and crowds and distance from the stage, I’d finally have the Coachella experience I’d always wanted.
