The Black Knight of Surfing

Miki Dora Stars in the Eighth Annual Digital Days Festival

Late surfing legend Miki Dora had an article published (post mortem, I believe) in The Surfer’s Journal titled “The Aquatic Ape,” which inspired third-generation filmmaker Wes Brown (grandson of Gaviota’s Bruce Brown, who made a little film called Endless Summer) to craft a mini-movie called Chasing Dora. The film follows Dora’s dream of a contest devoid of judges, wetsuits, or sponsors, to be held in eight-foot Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa on handmade, natural boards.

Quote of the Week

‘If people in that community are afraid to call us, who do you think they’re going to call to maintain social order? Uncle Fred and a couple of his friends, that’s who.’

-Former sheriff Jim Thomas, objecting to Sheriff Anderson’s interest in allowing local law enforcement to arrest undocumented workers.

A Day Without Immigrants in Santa Barbara

The heart and soul of the South Coast came out in full force this week as the largest public demonstration in the history of Santa Barbara hit the streets for a celebration of immigrants’ rights. As part of the nationwide A Day Without Immigrants rally, more than 20,000 men, women, and children-a vast majority of them Latino-made their way up State Street on Monday afternoon dressed in white, waving American flags, toting signs and banners with headlines like “No Immigrants No Business,” banging drums, and chanting the uplifting rallying cry of the day, “¡Si, se peude!” (“Yes, we can!”).

Exercise and the Idiot Box

I’ve rarely gone to the gym for good reasons like heart health or longer life. No, I’m all about vanity, fear, and the occasional bow to peer pressure.

GUGGENHEIM IN TOWN:

Congratulations to S.B.’s Hilary Brace for winning one of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships for her artistic drawing. Brace is one of 187 artists, scholars, and scientists across the country who won some of the $7.5 million given out, averaging around $40,000 per fellow. Keep up the good work!

Crash Courses

United 93

Lewis Alsamari, JJ Johnson, Trish Gates, and Polly Adams star in a film written and directed by Paul Greengrass.
Much ink and chatter has been spilled about the very existence of the film United 93, apart from whether it’s any good. This, after all, is the first Hollywood film addressing the dark and ominous subject of that day, and some fear that the film is crassly exploiting, for commercial gain, an American tragedy of mythic proportions.
