Blood Brothers Comes to High School

Normally, when you go to see a high school musical, you don’t expect intense drama or bloodshed. But that is exactly what you should expect from Blood Brothers, which plays at Laguna Blanca School through April 30. Blood Brothers, which tells a dark fairy-tale story of twins separated at birth against the grimy backdrop of 1960s Liverpool, is not just a departure for the school. It is also a local premiere for this musical drama, which has never been produced in the area.

The Independent’s Annual Young People’s Poetry Contest Winners

For the budding writers and blossoming poets in Santa Barbara’s high schools and junior highs, spring proves an important season, for April is the month that The Independent‘s annual Young People’s Poetry Contest comes to a close. This year, the contest-which is administered by the Santa Barbara Public Library and, in particular, by senior librarian Janice Rorick-also featured a Spanish language category, named in honor of Gabriel Mistral, whose visit here last year inspired this award.

Testimony ends in SBPD Trial

The trial of Ruben Lino-a homosexual ex-cop suing the Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD)-raged on last week as both sides battled to prove the real reasons why the department declined to rehire Lino. While Lino claims it’s because he reported other officers’ homophobic remarks, department brass staunchly insist Lino’s credit history disqualified him.

Devereux School Days Numbered

The Devereux School in Goleta was rocked last week by news that school officials intend to shut down two of the school’s more popular residential programs, as well as its day school-effectively cutting loose 87 developmentally disabled children and terminating more than 200 jobs in the process.

Selling the Oom Pah Pah

Oliver!

At PCPA’s Marian Theatre, Saturday, April 22.
What does a definitive Oliver! production look like? Should Lionel Bart’s classic be more stylized or more realistic like the great Carol Reed film from 1968, when the play was fresh from Broadway? This production, directed by Dianna Shuster, begins with a heap of set elements in the middle of the stage, like 1990s nouvelle cuisine with the steak piled up on the mashed potatoes and asparagus spears pointing to the sky.

Tea Party Averted

Angry boat owners crowded the City Council chambers Tuesday to protest a proposed five percent increase in harbor slip fees, managing to delay action by the Santa Barbara City Council’s Finance Committee. The slip fee controversy arose after Councilmembers Das Williams and Helene Schneider expressed concern that the City’s Parks and Recreation Department was subsidizing the ostensibly self-sufficient Waterfront Department.

RALLYING ‘ROUND ROTC:

About 20 members of Santa Barbara High School’s Junior ROTC program marched to school district headquarters last Friday to protest the program’s slated termination. A controversial vote earlier this spring set the wheels in motion for the nearly 100-year-old program to be replaced next year by a decidedly non-military peer leadership program of the district’s design.
