Neon Peeps

Photos from Las Vegas’s Sign Boneyard

Vegas, baby. Vegas. The name conjures a blur of images combining glitz, chintz, swank, and smut, all set against that incessant tinkety-tink, dingaling-ding casino soundtrack. But the most iconic images of Las Vegas have always been its signs.

Reading by Lightning

W.S. Merwin

At Campbell Hall, UCSB, Thursday, April 13.
Ten minutes into the reading, he is already taller, broader, shining. Halfway into the reading, he is towering, too bright to look at. He has stopped telling stories, giving explanations. He introduces a poem with a phrase, if that; mostly he reads and reads. However level his voice, it has taken on the exoticness and poignancy of a bassoon. William S. Merwin has become an ocean swimmer in a body of work in which it would be easy to become lost.

Pinback Is Back

Rob Crow Talks Music and Star Wars

pinback.gifFor those of you not familiar, Pinback is a mellow indie-rock band from San Diego who’s been playing together for about eight years. They come off as rather relaxed on their home recordings, yet are also known for playing the same songs more aggressively when in the flesh. The principal members are Rob Crow and Zach Hill, who, by the way, are also involved in a separate project called The Ladies, a band that will start touring at the end of May, after Pinback wraps up their current tour. That tour begins tonight with a sold-out show at UCSB.

Ears to the Present Future

EAR/MIND THERAPY: No, the organization known as the California EAR Unit will not bring medical degrees or agendas in their satchels when they arrive at UCSB’s Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall this Saturday. But there are important Rx factors related to their work, connected to mental and cultural therapy. For this scribe and many others, an encounter with the EAR Unit often reminds us that the future is here, and it’s an exciting, scary, and rule-bending place.

General Discontent

Senator Feinstein Joins Call for Rumsfeld to Resign

President George Bush sorely needs “a new team and a new strategy” to achieve his administration’s stated goal of creating a functioning government in Iraq, Senator Dianne Feinstein said, joining a chorus of retired U.S. Army generals who have called for the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in recent weeks.

The Pain of Denial

Recovering the Memory of Rape

“If you want to find out why you have failed relationships, don’t look to your father, look to your first love.” I’m reading a book by Marion Woodman, twirling my hair around my finger, and reminiscing out loud.

BIRD FLU INEVITABLE:

When it comes to avian influenza or bird flu on the South Coast, the question is “not if, but when,” health officials told Santa Barbara County supervisors on Tuesday.
