S.B. Event Pros’ Coming-Out Party

Last Thursday, the Santa Barbara Event Professionals had a coming-out party that doubled as a fundraiser for Sansum Diabetes Research Institute-and I knew better than to miss it; if anyone knows how to throw a party, my money’s on this group of pros, whose list of members reads like a who’s who of the Santa Barbara party planning industry.

Life in the Time of Torture

This week Jews and Christians celebrate two of their most sacred holidays-Passover, remembering
the liberation of Israelites from bondage, and Easter, commemorating Christ’s resurrection from death. In such a season of release and renewal, it seems appropriate for all Americans to contemplate the moral question of torture.

Double-Wide Exodus

After calling the Deluxe Trailer Park on the lower Eastside home for the last 21 years, Sylvia Parker, 65, will move out at the end of the month, along with many other residents. Santa Barbara city staff and the state’s housing department have identified numerous health, safety, and building code violations throughout the complex, including makeshift plumbing and electrical wiring.

Poetry in Motion

Poets-in-the-Schools Program Changes Lives

A multidisciplinary specialist is spending an hour with Mrs. Valadez’s third grade class. The students are working on emotional intelligence, community building, public speaking, language arts, divergent thinking, cultural awareness, and self-esteem. Of course, if you told the kids this, they’d think you were crazy. As far as they are concerned, they’re having fun-they’re writing poetry.

Vying for the Valley

Candidates scrambling for the County Board of Supervisors’ 2nd District seat, which represents most of Goleta Valley and some of the City of Santa Barbara, debated last Saturday at a forum sponsored by Santa Barbara Community Action Network.

Sanity Breaks Out on Measure D

Maybe it didn’t have the drama of Casablanca’s last scene, where Humphrey Bogart, ever the cynical softy, tells the effervescently corrupt Claude Rains, “Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” But the outcome of last Wednesday’s Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) meeting was just as moving. On the table for discussion was how that enormous pot of gold known as Measure D could be renewed and divvied up within the county.

Easter Delights

This Easter you can hide fancy baskets for the bunnies on your list thanks to the recently opened Basket Creations of Santa Barbara.

BEACH BODY IDENTIFIED:

Authorities identified an armless and severely decomposed body found on Tar Pits Beach in Carpinteria as Rachel Bendett. The 41-year-old mother was reported missing in San Diego on March 8 after she did not return to her mother-in-law’s house to pick up her three children.

DEPUTY DISCORD:

About two dozen members of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) filed a grievance charging their leaders changed the rules governing the sheriff’s endorsement mid game.

Pure Bliss

Olga Kern, presented by CAMA

At the Lobero Theatre, Friday, April 7.
Russian pianist Olga Kern understands with awesome precision what a piano recital needs to be like. Put as briefly as possible, there must be technical brilliance, and it must be in the service of romantic passion. Both of these Kern possesses in abundance.
