Shaping Up Nicely

The Shape of Things, presented by the Loose Affiliation of Artists. At Center Stage Theater, Thursday, September 28.

They may be loose in name, but there’s nothing sloppy about the Loose Affiliation of Artists (LAA), the five-strong, five-month-old theater company whose debut performance opened at Center Stage last Thursday.

Truth Is Elusive

Betrayal by Harold Pinter. At Ensemble Theatre Company, Friday, September 29.

Betrayal is an elusive play that raises many profound questions, most of which are left unanswered. The work explores the nature of betrayal and its unintended consequences. Based in part on Pinter’s own experience, this triangular love story is neither maudlin nor judgmental.

A High Jinks Hoedown

Rosie Flores. At the Maverick Saloon, Wednesday, September 27.

As Greg Leisz’s mandolin shimmered in beauty, it reflected the torrent that surged from Rosie Flores’s acoustic guitar. Flores introduced “God May Forgive You (But I Won’t)” as the greatest divorce song ever written, and by the time she had toured through the song’s first verse and chorus, the crowd was in total agreement.

Radio Daze

At least one thing came across crystal clear when TV on the Radio took the SOhO stage and obliterated the distance between band and crowd: Indie rock with an 18-and-older audience can be successfully programmed in Santa Barbara, the Classic Rock Valhalla.

Southern Swagger

On October 8, Gov’t Mule brings their soulful, southern rock jams to the Arlington Theatre. Led by guitar player and vocalist Warren Haynes, the band has been crafting its classic sound for more than 10 years, and according to the seasoned front man, should be going strong for decades to come.

No Contest: Voting 101

No Votes Needed: With Montecito residents often crawling over each other for prestigious board positions, it seems newsworthy that on November’s ballot there are no challenges to report for any of Montecito’s special district board seats. No election will be necessary at the Montecito Water District, whose three openings were filled by the three lone applicants, newcomers Sam Frye and Richard Shaikewitz, and incumbent Robert Puddicombe. At the Montecito Sanitary District it’s the same story.

Doin’ the Montage

So what’s the Montage? Given most Montecitans have strong opinions and an abundance of intelligent ideas, the Montage is Montecito’s only “real time” home for those tenets. It’s Montecito’s first and only community news/issues blog, a perfect place for those who are impatient with the printed page. If you’re interested in debating Montecito topics, or you are exploding with immediate news and opinions, the instant-message-Montage is the place for you!

Wit, Grit, and Wisdom

Jeff Beck. At the Arlington Theatre, Tuesday, September 26.

Nobody can make an electric guitar roar, sing, tease, and seduce like Jeff Beck can, especially when he’s on. When Beck showed up at the Arlington last week-the perennially mop-topped, irreverent pseudo adolescent at age 62-he was more on than at any of his Bowl shows over the years.

GLOBALIZE NOW

Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, has a new book out. And you should buy it-right away. Don’t wait for paperback; it’s that good. Making Globalization Work argues that globalization is one of the most vital issues facing us today, and makes a poignant case that we…
