Devon Sproule and Her Musical Maybes

The last time Devon Sproule came to town she had a vintage guitar dangling from her shoulder, a selection of songs as enchanting as the personality residing behind them, and a full house at the Lobero Theatre that wouldn’t let her leave the stage. It might have been Sings Like Hell that first introduced Sproule to Santa Barbara, but it is her considerable musical talent that has yielded a return invitation. This time around the Virginia native will be taking the stage at SOhO. Armed with a new album, she’s anxious to renew old acquaintances and likely to trigger an avalanche of new ones.

THEATER COMPANY

Discouraged by the lack of young adult themes in current Santa Barbara theater-as in relationships, sex, and finding your way, as opposed to the “young adult” genre for teens and pre-teens-Sara Martinovich, Brendon Flemming, Michael Conrad Jr., and Kate Paulsen (pictured, left to right) teamed up to form The Loose Affiliation of Artists.

All Bite, No Bark

It’s true I take everything personally. But this time I think I might be entitled. By the time you read this, the News-Press will have held its union election, and I’m betting the farm that by about 5:20 this Wednesday evening, the world will know the Teamsters were overwhelmingly elected to represent that paper’s unhappy newsroom workers in their dealings with Wendy McCaw, the daily’s gratuitously grim owner and co-publisher.

S.B.’s Film Fest Head Honcho Gives the Lowdown on Toronto and Telluride

telluride_sm.jpgThe Telluride and Toronto film festivals have become launching pads for films wanting to be considered serious Oscar contenders. After American Beauty premiered in Toronto in 1999, that fest’s fate was sealed and its momentum was unstoppable. Last year, Telluride was the place, giving filmgoers the chance to see Capote, Walk the Line, and Brokeback Mountain for the first time. But it’s not all benefits, for these festivals are also the place where Academy Award hopefuls can be shot down by critics, shattering any hope of glory.

Why You Need to Read Blue Water Gold Rush

Tom Kendrick-a former Santa Barbara resident and graduate of San Marcos High-is coming to town on October 5 to talk about his maiden book, Blue Water Gold Rush: The Odyssey of a California Sea Urchin Diver, which chronicles his ups and downs as a sea urchin diver from 1978 to 1996.

The Spawn of Slatkin

Introducing Justin Michael, Promoter of Music, Son of Felon

There’s a lot that makes music promoter Justin Michael remarkable. Most noticeably, his face began popping up at Santa Barbara clubs with such frequency in the last six months that even those who rarely make the nightlife rounds have probably seen him. But it’s something you haven’t noticed-the fact that Justin Michael lives with dual identities-that makes his story worth telling.
