Miami-based flamenco artist Omayra Amaya may be a direct descendant of the legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, but her work is the product of modern times and blended cultures. Fittingly, the program for Saturday’s show included an epigraph from a French writer, Albert Camus, warning us against “eluding the implacable grandeur of this life.

Rev. Tina Grant, responding to a letter from News-Press co-publisher Arthur von Wiesenberger. In the letter, von Wiesenberger dismissed reporters who complained about ethical transgressions at the paper as “so-called journalists,” and noted that reporters are held in even lower esteem than politicians and lawyers.

City Council Candidates Fight Over Fast Growth vs. Slow Growth

The Goleta City Council race pits three incumbents who have served since the city’s 2002 incorporation against three challengers who accuse them of being too slow-growth. Goleta voters, eager for cityhood, swept Cynthia Brock, Margaret Connell, and Jack Hawxhurst into office as part of the city’s first council, along with Jonny Wallis and one lone pro-growther, Jean Blois. Just two weeks ago, this council put the finishing touches on a meticulously crafted General Plan that cements slow-growth policies into Goleta’s very foundation.

Q: ‘How old is Cate School?’

Cate School, located at the end of Cate Mesa Road overlooking the Carpinteria Valley, is one of the most distinguished educational institutions on the South Coast. Approaching its 100th birthday, the school in many ways remains the embodiment of the educational principles set down by Curtis Wolsey Cate.
Cate was born in Massachusetts in 1884 and graduated from Harvard University in 1907. He traveled to California to take up a teaching career, first in Riverside, then for one year at the Thacher School in Ojai.
