At the Getty Villa’s Fleischman Theater, Saturday, September 16. Shows through September 30.
Nestled into the Malibu hillside, the elegant new Fleischman Theater at the Getty Villa has the clean lines and pleasing symmetry of an ancient Greek outdoor theater. Yet the architecture was eclipsed by a startling, original, and highly accomplished production of Greek tragedy that promises wonderful things to come, both at the Fleischman (their Greek plays will continue on an annual basis) and from the talented director Stephen Sachs, who has achieved something truly brilliant with this Hippolytos.
Sheriff Jim Anderson snagged some high-profile endorsements for his re-election bid last week, winning kind words from Santa Barbara Mayor
About two months ago, the Santa Barbara City Council approved the demolition of a worn-out 10-unit apartment complex on North La Cumbre Road-over the tearful objections of the tenants-to make way for a cluster of well-designed new condos. Most of the councilmembers were convinced they had no other choice. And many haven’t stopped feeling bad about it since. In hopes of securing a wider range of policy choices for the next time they confront an apartment tear-down, on Tuesday the City Council, along with members of the city’s Planning Commission, convened a special three-hour meeting.

At the Lobero Theatre, Friday, September 15.
Charles Lloyd gave his adopted hometown an insider’s preview of the main attraction at this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival. He performed at the Lobero last Friday with the same quartet he would use the next night in Monterey to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his classic live recording Forest Flower. Lloyd considers the Lobero his home these days-his most recent album with his other group, Sangam, was recorded live there just two years ago.
The annual global wholesales for the year 2000 of Ralph Lauren, the biggest-selling designer clothing label.
This Saturday, the grandniece of one of history’s most revered flamenco dancers takes the stage at the Lobero to open Santa Barbara’s seventh Flamenco Arts Festival (FAF), California’s original annual celebration of the powerful Latin art form. Miami-based flamenco bailaora Omayra Amaya carries with her the legacy of Carmen Amaya, the electrifying performer of Spanish gypsy heritage who traveled worldwide with her extended family, bringing the pride and passion of flamenco to Hollywood and Broadway in the 1930s and ’40s.
War Stories: Landscapes of Conflict in California, presented by Off-Axis.
At Samy’s Camera Gallery. Shows through September 30.
As global conflict leaves a daily imprint on our collective consciousness and we become desensitized to the consequences of war, there is an increasing need to understand war’s impact on the psyche. War Stories: Landscapes of Conflict in California, an exhibition of documentary photographs by William B. Dewey and Brett Leigh Dicks, does not depict the sites of physical battles or mass executions. Instead, both photographers portray areas in California that are far removed from actual combat-the Central Coast and the Owens Valley basin.
