Democracy in America
Reporter Steve Kroft of CBS News recently writes that many states in ‘Merica, California included, have finally reached the end of fiscal stability. The Not-So-Great Recession has “exposed decades of fiscal irresponsibility, reckless spending, unrealistic benefits packages for public employees, and the use of political gimmicks to cover up hidden deficit.” Every person that I speak to about this issue wonders how we got into this mess. The funny thing is, now we expect the guilty political parties to fix the same things they screwed up. How ironic is that? Perhaps it is time to rethink how we run things, at all levels. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote “The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults.”
