Anguish Spurs Action
Second Neighborhood Meeting on Milpas Traffic Safety
Guadalupe Romero, whose 15-year-old son was struck while attempting to cross Milpas Street at a crosswalk, demanded to know — via translators — why authorities could impound her car or deport her but not arrest the driver who killed her son. How many more kids would be killed, she demanded at a community meeting attended by 75 people, before City Hall took action? It was the second neighborhood meeting in three weeks sparked by Sergio Romero’s death. (Police are still investigating and have not yet determined whether the driver should be criminally charged.)
City traffic engineers sought to explain that state regulations would all but certainly preclude them from installing a new traffic light on Milpas Street. They have conducted a thorough review of accident reports along Milpas Street and will make those findings public early next year. Based on those results, City Hall will unveil recommendations to address ongoing safety concerns about traffic on Milpas Street.
