The last Independent had a news brief announcing that the Luria Foundation had given money to the SBCC library to expand hours and hire a specialist. I think it’s time for some Friends of the Library to also step up to the plate, in this city of compassionate giving, and provide funding so that our downtown public library can hire more staff and be open Mondays.
Another wonderful holiday present from those who can afford to do so, and there are many (all you have to do is look at the list of benefactors on the wall in the Lobero Theater) would be to provide money to the warming centers that local churches open up in winter, and to expand their use to more than winter hours.
As a cultural gift, I hope that finally some radio station will give playtime to the best holiday song not by Roger Williams or Handel: Phil Spector’s over-the-top holiday masterpiece featuring the manic drumming of Hal Blaine, and vocals by Darlene Love that are among the greatest of any era, “(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home.”
