Closing Arguments Begin in Lyons Trial
Third Lyons Trial Winding Down
Closing arguments began today in the case of Corey Lyons, who is accused of killing his brother, Daniel, and his brother’s partner, Barbara Scharton, in their Mesa home in the early morning hours of May 4, 2009. Deputy DA Ron Zonen finished his statement in the afternoon, and defense only had time to warm up.
Zonen argued that Corey Lyons entered his brother’s home — which he designed — through the back door and shot Barbara Scharton, who was sleeping in a room on the ground level, in the face. He then went upstairs to Daniel’s bedroom and fired five shotgun blasts before pulling out a .38 caliber gun to finish him off. Then, according to Zonen, he returned to Scharton’s room after hearing she was still alive and shot her four more times with a .22 caliber gun.
Sanger has not yet proposed his version of the night’s events, but has stressed that the burden of proof is on the state. Closing arguments will likely end on Monday or Tuesday, at which point the jury will deliberate. Two previous prosecutions of Corey Lyons ended in mistrials.
