Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is pleased to announce that Dr. Leonie Bradford has joined the organization as Clinical Research Program Manager. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration from Georgian Court University and a doctorate degree in organizational leadership from Argosy University.

Dr. Bradford served in New York City’s public sector as both a Senior Grant Administrator and Manager of Grant Finance and Administration for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH). In 2012, she was recognized by the NYC DOHMH for her leadership in the successful fiscal and administrative management and close-out of $15.5 million in Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) funding that addressed the obesity epidemic by implementing policy, systems, and environmental changes aimed at increasing physical activity, making healthy food more easily accessible, and educating the public about the harmful effects of sugary drinks and large portion sizes. By the conclusion of CPPW, NYC had made important strides in addressing obesity: over 2,000 architects, design professionals, and students had been trained on the Active Design Guidelines, a blueprint for creating healthier buildings, streets, and urban spaces that encourage stair use, walking, bicycling, transit use, active recreation, and healthy eating; 285 waters jets had been installed in NYC public schools to increase access to fresh, cool tap water; four media campaigns had run warning of the potentially serious health consequences of consuming sugary drinks and large portions; 13 NYC hospitals had taken steps towards becoming more breastfeeding- friendly; and permits were issued for 42 new Play Streets, temporarily closed blocks of streets to give children safe places to play.

Today, in addition to managing Sansum Diabetes’s multi-faceted diabetes research program, she leads a telephone prayer ministry. Dr. Bradford also volunteers on chronic disease prevention and youth development projects in Jamaica.
