Our little corner of the world is filled with brilliant musicians who ought to be more widely known than they are (I’m looking at you, Lompoc). Ojai’s Jeff Uzzel is one such man. Having heard him at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club, his loop-based, guitar-hearted songs came as a delightful surprise to all of our previously unaware ears. His new EP Like a River is a lush and dramatic work, with soaring opener “Fox in the Coop” deepened with brass. Numbers such as “Georgia” have a driving and breezing quality, while “Scars” is a meditative sundowner of a song. It’s great music for contemplative drives up the 33 and the wild blue yonder.
