Sculptress, painter and etcher Angie Whitson will be at Solvang Antiques on August 21st as part of their “Summer Art Series.” Every Solvang 3rd Wednesday throughout the Summer, Solvang Antiques will feature a different artist with a champagne reception from 2-6 pm. Whitson’s work will remain on special display until September 15.
Whitson, M.I.B.A., has a long tradition of arts in her family. She is a descendant of Pope Pius VII who was a champion of the arts. She began her career as a painter, studying at the Pasadena Museum of Art, now called the Norton Simon museum. It was there she found that she was a natural at color composition and became interested in sculpture.
She is most noted for her limited-edition bronze sculpture and her limited-edition etchings using the soft ground technique with aquatint. She presents her etchings in a very serious mood, particularly her nudes, but also has a lighter humorous side, bringing laughter and joy to the viewer.
Whitson is registered permanently with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. for the archival work on installed bronzes in the academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She has done bronze busts of Leonard Goldenson, Bob Barker, Mike Wallace, Leonard Goldberg and Ernie Kovacs for various studios and museums.
She has won numerous gold medals along with first, second and third prizes. In her first international exhibit show Whitson won first place for her fine sculpture. Many clients have adorned their homes with Whitson’s sculpture, soft ground etchings and her humorous etchings of penguin’s “The Sophistiguins.”
Solvang 3rd Wednesdays are held the third Wednesday of every month, with dozens of merchants, restaurants, wine tasting rooms and professional offices offering special discounts, events and sales. In the summer months this includes free music and activities in Solvang Park.
Join Solvang Antiques on Wednesday, August 21 to meet Angie Whitson and enjoy the champagne reception. Whitson’s work will be on special display until September 15.
Keith Batcheller will be the final artist for Solvang Antiques “Summer Art Series” on September 18. For additional information, go to solvangantiques.com/gallery-events.
