In the summer of 2019, Spencer the Gardener released Organic Gangster 2, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2009 Organic Gangster, which was a hit with kids, parents, and good-food lovers alike.
This summer, the band dropped a music video off that album for the banger “Fruits and Vegetables,” featuring longtime bandmates Jim Connolly as broccoli, Tom Lackner as asparagus, Liz Barnitz as an orange, and front man Spencer Barnitz as a carrot. Perhaps the biggest star is Isabella Venable, who created the illustrations and video.
“From the shysters, hucksters, snake-oil salesmen, fake news, real news, ratings news, to the conspiracy theories, impostor syndrome, social influencers, influenza, and the Spanish flu started in Oklahoma and how did I never learn of Greenwood, the Tulsa Massacre, and Black Wall Street until now, through colonialism and corporationalism, imperialism and Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Pandemic, pandemonium, the Pink Panther, anti-vaxxers, Internet trolls, bots, election fraud, politics, and all the ships at sea,” said Spencer. “One thing remains true: Fruits and vegetables are good for you!” Buy his latest album at spencerthegardener.com.
