Five former students of Carpinteria’s Aliso Elementary School, back when it was a “Mexicans only” campus in the 1930s and ’40s, celebrated the 75th anniversary of desegregating California’s schools at an event this week hosted by the Latinx Arts Project. Tomas Castelo (80), Benito Villegas (80), Lorenzo Martinez (93), Salvador Campos (95), and Josephine Villegas (103) helped kick-start a fundraising campaign for a “Past, Present, Future” series of murals that will celebrates the Latino culture and history of Carpinteria.
