Sundowner winds are dry gusty winds that descend from the Santa Ynez Mountains and have driven every rapidly spreading wildfire in Santa Barbara. Predicting these winds is crucial to improving resilience against wildfire, a task made difficult by the region’s beautiful yet complex geography.

UC Santa Barbara Postdoctoral Scholar Callum Thompson, Ph.D., will highlight what UCSB weather and climate researchers have discovered about sundowner winds to date, and discuss ongoing research, including a field campaign just conducted in spring 2022.

Join our fun and friendly conversation and quench your thirst for knowledge about science and nature in this ongoing series of free science talks organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and held on the second Monday of every month. No tickets or reservations required, but be sure to get to Dargan’s (18 E. Ortega St. in downtown Santa Barbara) early to secure a seat and order your favorite food and drink.
