WSET’s Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner- to intermediate-level qualification exploring wines, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.
This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

INSTRUCTOR
Our instructor is Monica Marin, also our WSET Program Director! Monica is the full-time Director of Wine Education at the Wine House in Los Angeles where she has built the next generation of wine professionals for many years (including our own Drew Cuddy, Lindsey Reed, and Paul Zink – as well as our dear friend, former instructor, and Master of Wine Candidate Lenka Davis).
Monica is a long-time WSET instructor and a Master of Wine Candidate. We credit her not only for jump-starting our program but bringing WSET education to Los Angeles and the Central Coast! Monica was a top candidate in the 2020 WSET Instructor of the Year listing!

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)
How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking, and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Grigio/Gris
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Riesling
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Syrah/Shiraz
- The style and quality of wines:
- made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
- produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
- How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:
- Sparkling wines
- Fortified wines
- Key labeling terms used to indicate origin, style, and quality
- Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of a wine
- Principles of Food and wine pairing
- Number of Wines Tasted: At least 20 wines will be tasted as part of the course
STUDY MATERIALS
Students will receive the Level 2 Intermediate Award in Wines Study Guide
DURATION OF COURSE
16 hours
A minimum of 11 additional hours of self-guided study are recommended to succeed in the course.
EXAMINATION
A one-hour closed-book examination comprised 50 multiple-choice questions. A mark of 70% required to pass
CERTIFICATION
On successful completion of the examination, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET-certified logo
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age in the country where you are attending the course to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification. Requirements may vary by the course provider.
