Sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across the country have been subjected to increased hate incidents, including verbal harassment, civil rights violations, and physical assaults. Since its founding in March 2020, thousands of incidents have been reported to the Stop AAPI Hate coalition. Manjusha Kulkarni will discuss how Stop AAPI Hate is addressing anti-Asian hate through civil rights enforcement, education equity, community-based safety, and building a movement against systemic racism.

Manjusha Kulkarni, Esq., is Co-Founder and Co-Director of Stop AAPI Hate, the nation’s leading aggregator of COVID-19-related hate incidents against AAPIs, and Executive Director of AAPI Equity Alliance, which serves and represents the 1.5 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Los Angeles County. She also serves on the Board of Directors of LA Voice and is a member of the City of Los Angeles Ethics Commission and the California Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board. As part of her advocacy work on behalf of AAPI communities, Kulkarni has shared her expertise with countless individuals and entities, including the Aspen Institute, World Bank, United Nations, and U.S. Congress. For her work with Stop AAPI Hate, she has been recognized with awards from Time, Forbes, and Bloomberg/Business Week for her activism. She holds a BA from Duke University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law. She has taught as a Lecturer in Asian American Studies at UCLA. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, CBS News, CNN, and various ethnic media outlets.

We are excited to partner with the Asian American Studies department, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Stop AAPI Hate, which is celebrating its 3rd anniversary, in presenting this event.

This event is both in person and will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel (link here).
