On Wednesday, November 18 at 6pm, please join us online for an action-packed evening with suspense writer Joe Ide.  While Time Magazine calls his  novels “an electrifying combination of Holmseian mystery and SoCal grit”, the New York Tmes’ Janet Maslin calls Ide’s IQ series “a Los Angeles classic right from the start.”
Via an announcement in June, an adaptation of the series will be produced by the rapper Snoop Dogg
For this Chaucer’s Author Discussion episode, Ide will talk about this series, which released HIGH FIVE earlier this year, his own life that began in a hardscrabble way and later included dabbling in various careers before becoming a writer, and finally, his latest venture of teaching and influencing other writers.
Joe Ide’s most recent installment of the IQ series HIGH FIVE is out now in hardcover and will be released in paperback in January.   The next installment titled SMOKE, is set to drop in February 2021.
HIGH FIVE
IQ IS BACK and working a case that involves juggling  more personalities than he expected.
Cristiana is the daughter of the biggest arms dealers on the West Coast, Angus Byrne. She’s also the sole witness and number one suspect in the murder of her boyfriend, found dead in her Newport Beach boutique. Isaiah Quintabe is coerced into taking the case to prove her innocence. If he can’t, Angus will harm the brilliant PI’s new girlfriend, ending her career. The catch: Christiana has multiple personalities. Five radically different ones. Among them, a naïve, beautiful shopkeeper, an obnoxious drummer in a rock band, and a wanton seductress. Isaiah’s dilemma: no one personality saw the entire incident. To find out what really happened the night of the murder, Isaiah must piece together clues from each of the personalities—before the cops catch up.
JOE IDE is of Japanese American descent and grew up in South Central Los Angeles. Joe’s favorite books were the Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories. The idea that a person could face the world and vanquish his enemies with just his intelligence fascinated him. Joe went on to earn a graduate degree and had several careers before writing his debut novel, IQ, inspired by his early experiences and love of Sherlock. Joe lives in Santa Monica, California.
Praise for Joe Ide’s IQ SERIES
“Read, enjoy and then impatiently wait around for the next one like the rest of us”
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
“These are books and authors I would like to emulate: The Tin Roof Blowdown by James Lee Burke, In the Woods by Tana French, and IQ by Joe Ide.”
Michael Connelly
“I don’t know how fast Joe Ide writes, but from now on he’ll have to write faster. . . . This is one of the most intriguing — and appealing– detective characters to come along in years”
Carl Hiaasen, author of Razor Girl
