Please join us as we are fortunate to host one of the west coast screenings of We, the Voyagers: Lata’s Children.
These Polynesian voyagers of Taumako in the Solomon Islands, have just completed a documentary series that took 26 years in the making. In Part 1of two film series We, the Voyagers: Our Vaka, you will hear the voyagers history, motivations, and skill through storytelling, canoe building, and wayfinding. They use only the designs, materials, and methods of their culture-hero, Lata, who built the first voyaging canoe (vaka) and navigated to distant islands. They invite everyone to reconnect with ancestors and sustainable lifeways. This is the real Moana!
After the film, we will be joined by Marianne “Mimi” George, PhD, for a 30 minute Q & A. Dr. George is a remote-ocean sailor and cultural anthropologist and supports perpetuation and revival of ancient voyaging practices and awareness of voyaging knowledge systems. Accompanying Dr. George will be Mariner, Luke Vaikawi.
