William Davies King, author of Collections of Nothing (reviewed in the NY Times, New Yorker, one of Amazon’s top 100 books for 2008), is a UC Santa Barbara theater historian who has thought a lot about the fascination so many people share with collecting. Who collects? Why? What? To what end? And how is collecting an art? He’s just completing a new book: A Plentiful Life: Thinking Through Collecting.
His own collecting is of that peculiar sort he terms “nothing.” Through July 12, at the Red Barn Gallery on the UCSB campus, he has transformed his collecting into a Museum of Nothing (Beta version). Consider coming to its “re-opening” on July 7, 4:00-7:00. For more information, see his website: williamdaviesking.com
On Sunday, July 9, he will tell the strange story of how collecting “nothing” has led to the curation of his own museum.
Over 21s only.
