Well over a thousand members of the Santa Barbara community gathered at Leadbetter Beach on Saturday, June 6, to perform a Hawaiian paddle-out ceremony to pay tribute to African-American victims of police brutality. Following a passionate, change-seeking speech from event leader Chris Ragland, participants paddled out together at around 10 a.m. with flowers and formed a circle in the ocean. Splashing water into the air and drumming on the tops of their surfboards, members of the paddle-out participated in mourning and remembering the lives of the recent African-American victims.
